Soon, you’ll discover 30% more PDX to love
February 24, 2025

If you think you’ve seen the new PDX, think again. When 2026 arrives, you’ll have 30% more of the main terminal to explore—and PDX will be much easier to get around.

The long walks? Gone. The temporary exit lanes through the concourse connector? Don’t need ’em anymore. Those bypasses to gates C and E that have been challenging for folks with mobility issues? Bye-bye. In addition to shorter distances between the front doors and your airline gate, you’ll find soft new seats where you can take a break, plus even more local shops and restaurants to hang out in.

Where are we building this extra 30%?

When we opened the new PDX in August 2024, we also closed off the terminal’s north and south ends. Remember the old security checkpoints with the latticed glass roofs? They’ve been demolished, and now we’re updating these spaces to match the rest of the terminal.

Extra help for long walks

If the long walks at PDX are difficult for you, let us help you get to and from your flight during this year’s construction! Even if you don’t use a wheelchair in your daily life, our wheelchair assistants can make your trip through the airport easier. Before you fly, call your airline to request wheelchair assistance, or call 503-460-4300 as soon as you arrive at PDX.

What’s coming in 2026: More flow and more comfort

Our goal has always been to make PDX even PDX-ier, celebrating everything we love about the Pacific Northwest. This last phase of the project is all about making PDX easier to get around, too. Here’s what we’re adding:

rendering of large circular opening with escalators to baggage claim
New escalators on the north and south will lead you straight down to baggage claim.

Shorter walks and streamlined exits. The temporary exit route you now take when you fly into PDX is designed to keep everyone safe during construction. In 2026, we’ll open the permanent exit lanes. From that point forward, you’ll walk a shorter, more direct route straight down to baggage claim. (Bonus: You can zip from the south baggage claim area right into the MAX station!)

We will replace the temporary exits in the center of the main terminal with comfortable seating.

More comfortable seating: We’re going to add comfortable seating areas all around the main terminal—both in the center, where we’ll install soft-backed chairs and benches, and in two new “meeter-greeter” areas outside the exit doors, where friends and family can wait for arriving passengers to exit.

More bathrooms: On both the north and south ends of the terminal, we’re adding rows of all-user restrooms with private, high-walled stalls lit by sunlight and draped in plants.

Also coming soon: More food and fun

ZGF Architects designed the two marketplaces on the south and north ends of the terminal to capture the warm neighborhood feel you get on Portland’s Alberta Street or N.W. 23rd. In the marketplaces, you’ll find:

  • More lounges. Two new passenger lounges are set to open: Coming in 2025 is a Portland branch of the Escape Lounge network, which charges a fee for access, and a new Alaska lounge on the south end of the terminal in early 2026.

  • 14 new shops and restaurants. Local businesses that opened kiosks in 2024, like Powell’s Books and Straightaway Cocktails, will soon expand into full-sized spaces. Also, look for newcomers such as Kure Superfoods, Lola’s Cafe, and Pilot House Distilling, as well as four new newsstands with local grab-and-go options.

  • And more! In 2026, you’ll also discover major new artworks, more spots for local musicians to play, and more sections of the iconic PDX carpet for your pre-flight shoe selfies.
