If you have flown in and out of PDX’s Concourse C on a regular basis, you've probably seen Lowell Jackson Sr.—and likely talked to him, too. For the past 8 years, the owner of Jackson Shine Co. has been shining shoes and chatting up people at his stand near Gate C5. So many visitors and airport staff stop by to say hello that Lowell's youngest son, Honor, calls him the "unofficial mayor of the airport."

"Customer service is my number-one thing," Lowell says. "I love meeting people. I love to move around and talk to you about anything, have great conversations."

But Jackson Shine Co. isn't just a one-man operation—it's a family business. Honor has worked alongside Lowell or behind the scenes since 2017. When Jackson Shine Co. opened a second stand in Concourse E in June 2022, Lowell's older son, Chris, joined the business, too.

A few things to know about Jackson Shine Co. and how it’s growing:

Being a family business means a lot to the Jacksons.

"It's really special to get to work with my dad," Honor says. "Growing up with just my dad, we're really close. But, to see him in a new way, working with him day in and day out, I've learned so much more about my dad."

Freshly shined shoes make a difference in how you feel.

"A nice, short-cropped haircut and nice, shiny shoes will clothe you," Lowell says. "When your shoes look good, and you've got a nice cut, you walk taller."

But the real reason to stop by Jackson Shine Co. are the Jacksons themselves.

"For certain, we give great shoe shines," Honor says, "but more than that, it's the experience we give customers. My dad is the GOAT. He just has a real gift of gab that makes people feel included. They have a fun time and get a good laugh."

And shiny shoes are not just for businessmen.

"Ninety percent of our customers are still men, but an increasing number are women,” Lowell says. “If I see them walking around the stand, maybe looking down at the shoes, that's a sign for me to open my mouth: 'Come on up and get a shine.'"

The new Concourse E stand was one of Honor's MBA projects at Willamette University.

Honor: "I would go in front of my class every week with a PowerPoint and talk about some aspect of Jackson Shine Co.'s E side,” Honor says. “It was really special for my dad to sit in on my final presentation and see what I have been doing and where I could see the business going."

One new target audience: Sneakerheads.

"My dad tells me about a time when people would get dressed up to travel,” Honor says. “Now we see sneakers around here all day long. As a sneakerhead, I have over 150 pairs of shoes myself. In sneaker culture, you have clean shoes. Whether you have suede, leather, or canvas sneakers, we want to clean it all for you."
