PDX’s New Roof Is as Local as Your Farmers’ Market

Have you heard of the locavore movement from the mid 2000s? It challenged people to eat food grown within 100 miles of where they live. For the wooden roof at PDX’s new main terminal, we essentially asked all our partners, from forest stewards to construction companies, to stick to a locavore diet—with wood.

Our original goal was to make sure that all the lumber came from sustainably managed forests in the Cascadia region—basically, everywhere a salmon might swim upstream. By the time we sourced all 2.6 million board-feet of Douglas fir, we realized every forest and firm that supplied our wood is within 300 miles of the airport.

Scroll around the map to see if the wood came from a forest near you.
